This morning on NBC’s Today Show, Matt Lauer brought viewers what was obviously intended to be a particularly heart-wrenching story from a neighborhood in Queens, NY which was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Lauer told the story of a community which was burning while firefighters couldn’t get trucks through the water-filled streets. This community is especially familiar with “disasters”, apparently. According to Lauer’s report, more than 50 people from this neighborhood died in the 9-11 attack, and only two months later, American Airlines flight 587 crashed into the neighborhood November 12, 2001, killing all 260 passengers and five people on the ground. At the end of the story, Lauer told co-anchor Savannah Guthrie that while he was there putting together his story, all the people he talked to there in the street were saying the same thing: “’I wonder if the people of FEMA know how much we need them now.’”
