Questions about 2012 DA14 to which we deserve answers.
February 16, 2013 in Science
I just presented the following questions to my Senator and Congressman. If you are curious about answers to these questions or others please ask your representatives.
Was there a mission by the United States Government to attempt to divert or destroy asteroid 2012 DA14 prior to its close approach to our planet on Friday, 15 February 2012?
If so, when will this information be released to the public? What agencies were involved in the mission? What methods of diversion or destruction were attempted? What date and time was the mission supposed to be attempted?
If a mission was not launched by the United States Government to attempt to divert or destroy asteroid 2012 DA14, why not? Was a plan developed and disapproved? What agencies were involved in the planning? Who disapproved the plan? Why was the plan disapproved?
Are there criteria to test theoretical methods for diverting or destroying potentially hazardous asteroids?
If it was not approved, what are the criteria to approve a mission to test theoretical method of diverting or destroying an asteroid with the potential to impact Earth?
If there are no criteria to test these theoretical methods, please justify why there is a budget to fund NASA’s Near Earth Object program for tracking potentially hazardous asteroids.
