Unethical reward system encourages GPs to push vaccines even if they do not believe in them themselves.

Data collected from health boards in 2011 – 12 show that only 30.4% of health and social care staff in Scotland took the ‘flu’ Vaccine (http://www.sehd.scot.nhs.uk/cmo/CMO(2012)06.pdf) despite an aggressive national campaign aimed at encouraging more people to take this vaccine.
Why would so many health care workers who have chosen to devote their time to helping others, refuse this vaccine potentially putting patients at risk? While I cannot supply the answer to this question I can tell you why I personally have problems with vaccines.
Let’s start by looking into some of the facts behind Influenza and the seasonal flu vaccine.
Influenza viruses are constantly changing and there are hundreds of different strains of human influenza viruses. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm )
Considering how many strains there are being protected from only three does not seem to provide much protection at all. Even in horse racing no amount of research can guarantee you picking the winner even when there are only about seven runners, imaging trying to pick the first three if there were hundreds of runners.
I also have a moral issue that Payments are made to GPs for administrating influenza vaccinations despite the fact that many of these same GPs do not take the vaccine themselves. Take a look at the reward GPs receive -
Payments to GPs for influenza vaccination are detailed in an NHS Circular.
There are targets for those over 65 receiving the vaccination as follows:
- 40% £7.17 per immunisation;
- 40 – 75%, £8.85 per immunisation;
- 75%, £9.39 per immunization.
For all other groups, also listed in the same Circular, there is a flat-rate fee of £7.67 per immunisation awarded. There are no targets for these groups. (http://www.sehd.scot.nhs.uk/pca/PCA2011(M)14.pdf )
The financial rewards for giving out this vaccine are huge and a great incentive to ignore any health concerns about this vaccine that GPs may have.
Now let’s have a look at some of these health concerns I have mentioned. There has been a lot of concern about the ingredients in vaccines with thimerosal (mercury) causing the most concern and rightly so as no amount of mercury is considered safe. There have been reported concerns about links between thimerosal and brain damage and autism, with young children being regarded as the most vulnerable.
The good news is that thimerosal is not present in the influenza vaccines used currently in Scotland though the Influenza Fluvirin vaccine does contains traces of Thiomersal that are left over from the manufacturing process.
The bad news is what is in these seasonal flu vaccines. There are two influenza vaccines used in Scotland, Fluarix and Fluvirin.
Here is a list of the ingredients from the Fluarix vaccine:
sodium deoxycholate -Potential Acute Health Effects:
Hazardous in case of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant).
formaldehyde – Effects of acute exposure
Death if inhaled or absorbed; severe eye irritation and burns; allergic dermatitis, skin burns; bronchitis, pulmonary oedema; headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting; abdominal pain; blindness.
Effects of chronic exposure
Nasal cancer, respiratory tract irritation; reproductive disorders, asthma, dermatitis; multiple organ damage.
octoxynol-10 - Triton X-100 is a commonly used detergent in laboratories – applications include Decellularization of animal-derived tissues.
Apart from laboratory use, Triton X-100 can be found in several types of cleaning compounds, ranging from heavy-duty industrial products to gentle detergents. It is also a popular ingredient in homemade vinyl record cleaning fluids together with distilled water and isopropyl alcohol.
α-tocopheryl hydrogen succinate
polysorbate 80 –( Taken from NaturalNews) German researchers have identified polysorbate 80 as the cause of an anaphylactic reaction in a patient. Pubmed.gov cited the study, which concluded that “polysorbate 80 is a solubilizing agent that can cause severe nonimmunologic anaphylactoid reactions” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16400901 . In other words, this agent can suppress your immune system and cause a severe allergic reaction, which could kill you.
As far back as 1993, scientists were aware that polysorbate 80 causes infertility in mammals. Baby female rats were injected with the substance and experienced accelerated maturation, hormonal changes, decreased weight of the uterus and ovaries, and degenerative follicles http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8473002?dopt=Abstract .
See also MSDS for polysorbate 80 : Potential Acute Health Effects: Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation.
hydrocortisone - Potential Acute Health Effects: Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant, permeator), of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation.
Potential Chronic Health Effects: CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available.
DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Classified Reproductive system/toxin/female, Reproductive system/toxin/male [SUSPECTED].
The substance may be toxic to the reproductive system. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.
gentamicin sulphate – Potential Acute Health Effects:
Hazardous in case of skin contact (permeator), of ingestion, of inhalation. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant).
Potential Chronic Health Effects: Hazardous in case of skin contact (permeator), of ingestion. CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Not available. The substance may be toxic to kidneys, the nervous system and ears. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.
ovalbumin – Ovalbumin (abbreviated OVA) is the main protein found in egg white, making up 60-65% of the total protein
As you can see some of these ingredients are listed as hazardous to health and 2 have been linked to infertility. Could this be the reason that about 70% of health and social care staff don’t take these vaccines?
I have major concerns about the pharmaceutical industry which I believe puts profit before health. They do not operate in a transparent manner which is alarming because it suggests that they have something to hide. How many people would choose to take these vaccines if they were given all the facts before making a decision? The promotional posters and leaflets used for these vaccines would lead you to believe that you would be well protected from all flu not just three strains.
The fact that more than 10,000 people die every year in the UK from bad reactions to prescribed treatments (according to sky News and other sources ) shows that there is cause for concern with how the pharmaceutical industry is allowed to work.
Questions have to be asked not just of the pharmaceutical industry but also our government for allowing these vaccines to be pushed on the public through fear mongering and an unethical reward system that encourages GPs to push vaccines even if they do not believe in them themselves.
