While most people still think they are doing something good for their health when supplementing with Folic Acid, the vast majority have yet to discover that it has been found that the benefits of Folate, Vitamin B9, found in food and readily utilized by our body, that are also thought to be made available to us through Folic Acid supplementation, are not.

Apparently the synthetic form of Folate or Folic Acid can not be totally broken down and utilized by the body . That which can not be absorbed has been linked to not only increased cancer risks but additionally brain atrophy.

While he extols the benefits of Folate, the damaging effect on brain health from Folic acid in take  should outweigh any other benefits,Dr  Parris Kidd PhD  suggests in his article on page 15 of the Alternative Medicine Review Vol. 13 number 2 , 2008 entitled “Alzheimers Disease; Amnestic  Mild Cognitive Impairment; and Age Associated Memory Impairment:  Current Understanding and progress Toward Integrative Prevention”. http://www.thorne.com/altmedrev/.fulltext/13/2/85.pdf

He notes that studies have shown benefits of Folic acid  to the developing fetus have been realized during pregnancy but points out a conflicting study by Snowden et all showed low blood Folate levels and brain atrophy associated with Folic acid supplementation.

On his website ,
http://www.drfuhrman.com/libraryfolic_acid_dangers_and_prenatal_vitamins.aspx,Dr Joel Fuhrman, M.D. warns against taking multi vitamins with Folic Acid due to increased breast cancer and increased prostate cancer proclivities among other reasons.

Even a study conducted in Norway reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2009 on November 18 in Vol 302 No.19 confirms the increased incidences of cancer of those taking Folic Acid long term. http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=184898
